PDA loans $400,000 to food processing company

The Americus-Sumter Payroll Authority (PDA) voted at a special-called meeting Thursday to loan $400,000 to Specialized Food Products LLC so the company can purchase a special "spiral" freezer.
Gene Smith of Specialized Food Products, who was at the PDA meeting, said the company will target niche markets, like producing Italian ice and "bagel dogs."
The company is relocating to Americus from California and is currently in the process of trying to secure a factory in Americus to operate its business.
Smith said he hopes Specialized Food Products will be up and running in Americus in August, and will need about 40 employees to begin production. Specialized Food Products will have to repay the loan back to the PDA over a 10-year period.
