AMERICUS -The 35,000-sq.-ft.,"full feature" Harveys Supermarket in Forsyth Commons, formerly known as the Bel Air Plaza, will have a grand opening at 9 a.m. March 19, said Lisa Smith, a brand manager at Harveys. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will begin at 8:30 a.m.
The two Harveys Supermarkets already in Americus, one on South Lee Street and the other in the Perlis Plaza, will close. The South Lee Street store will close March 18 and the Perlis Plaza store will close April 19, said Smith.
All the employees at the current stores have been offered jobs at the new store. "Our first priority was to take care of the employees that already work at the other two stores," said Smith. She said no more employment applications are being accepted right now for the new store.
"The new Harveys store will feature all the things Harveys is well known for, including a full-service pharmacy, deli-bakery, updated and expanded grocery, frozen food and dairy and a wide selection of fresh meats and produce," explained Harvey's spokesman, Karen Peterson.
Harveys is a sister company of Food Lion and both are subsidiaries of Delhaize America, explained Peterson. Delhaize America is headquartered in Salisbury, N.C.
Peterson was asked why Harveys chose to build a new store in Americus.
"Harveys chose Americus because of the long-standing loyalty to and patronage of Harveys by the people in Americus, Sumter County and the surrounding area," she said.
